zante caretta-carettaThe sea turtle called Caretta-Caretta is endangered specie which can only be found in the Mediterranean Sea. This turtle can reach a length of 1, 2 metres and can weight until 100 kg. The female turtle goes to a dry part of some sandy beach to lay her eggs in a hole of 40 to 60 centimetres deep during the nights of June and August. Two months later, the hatchlings are born and return to the sea. The surviving female turtles return twenty to thirty years later to their natal beach to lay her eggs in her turn.

All these have caused the formation of various international agreements protecting the endangered sea turtle Caretta-Caretta.

Various measures have been taken by the Greek legislation in order to protect the Caretta-Caretta; the National Marine Park of Zante has also been established for the same purpose. This Marine Park is lying in the southern coasts of the island and covers the area of Laganas. More information about the Marine Park can be obtained at the website: www.nmp-zak.org

6.
Don’t dig up turtles nests
7. Don’t pick up the hatchlings or carry them to the water
8. Don’t use speedboats in Laganas Bay.

The turtles have leaved peacefully in the waters and beaches of Zante but the extension and growth of touristy industry have cause the disappearance of many of them; that is the reason why the specie is now under direct threat.

An airport has even been built nearby the beach of Laganas which is one of the favourite place of many female turtles for laying their eggs; every year, sea turtles are killed by motorboats and a lot of sandy beaches are destroyed and polluted; a lot of turtles are dying trapped in the fishing nets and from the increasing pollution of the sea.

.
The Society for Turtle Protection in association with the Greek Ministry of Environment have created a list of some simple regulations helping to protect the Caretta-Caretta; every visitor should try to follow those simple rules:

1. Don’t use the beaches of the Gulf of Laganas and Yerakas between sunset and sunrise.
2. Don’t stick umbrellas in the sand in the marked zones.
3. Take the rubbish away
4. Don’t use lights near the beach at night because it disturbs the turtles
5. Don’t take any vehicle on the protected beaches
