Zante
has many churches and monasteries that have survived from the earthquakes
of 1953 and other that have been built after that. Here are some of
the most famous and more visited churches and monasteries of the island.
His corpse is kept in a silver carved reliquary.
The church was built in 1708 and the impressive icons were created
by the hagiographers Koutouzis and Doxaras.
The Church of Agios Dionysios
Located in the southern part of the capital of Zante, close to the
harbour, the church of Agios Dionysios (Saint Dionysus) is dedicated
to Agios Dionysios, saint patron of the island. |

The church is visited every year by numerous pilgrims who come to
honour the saint.
On the 17th of December a celebration is held in memory of the saint’s
death and, on the 24th of August, another one takes place to commemorate
the transportation of the saint’s Body from a monastery where it used
to be this church.
The Church of Agia Mavra
The Church of Agia Mavra
This church can be found in the village of Maherado and was built
during the 14th century; it is considered as one of the most important
churches of the island of Zante. The church possesses a huge Venetian
belfry which was built in a certain way so when the bells ring they
can be heard throughout Zante. A remarkable collection of fine icons
and frescoes painted by famous Greek artists are housed in the church. |

The Church of Agios Georgios Filikon
This church is lying on the top of a hill in the area of
Bohali and is one of the most famous churches of Zante for the icon
it is housing was the icon in front of which the members of the
secret revolutionary organisation called “Filiki Eteria” (Friendly
Organisation) took their vows to serve the Revolution and fight
the Turks. A listing of the names of the members can be seen; famous
names of Greek revolutionary heroes such as Kolokotronis, Fotomaras
and Nikitaras are there.
The Monastery of Anafonitria
Located in the area of Plemonariou, north-west of Zakynthos, near
the village of the same name, this monastery was built during the
middle of the 15th century in honour of Panagia Vrefokratoussa (Virgin
Holder of the Newborn); it owns its name to the miraculous icon
of Our Virgin Anafonitria which is kept inside the church.
