The Feast
of Agios Dionysios
Two major festivals are celebrated in honour of Agios Dionysios, Saint
Patron of Zante.
On the 24th of August a first festival is held in memory of the transportation
of the Saint’s body from the monastery of Strofadia to the church
of Agios Dionysios.
The second festival is celebrated on the 17th of December and commemorated
the date of the death of the saint.
Those festivals are lasting three days during which various religious
ceremonies are held, followed by traditional dances and music which
are accompanied by local food and wine; Thousands of people and pilgrims
from all over the island and from other parts of Greece are participating
to those feasts. Feast of the
Virgin Mary
During the 15th of August, like in all the other places of Greece,
a religious ceremony is held in Zante in honour of the Virgin, followed
by dances, eating and drinking until dawn.
The villages of Vassilikos and Katastari are organising a particularly
popular and lively feast.
Feast of Agia Mavra
On the 3rd of May the feast day of Agia Mavra is taking place; it
begins with a religious ceremony in the church of the village of
Maherado and is followed by a banquet with traditional dances taking
place on the square of the village.
