A large square (Solomos Square) boarded by elegant arcaded buildings
was given the name of the famous Greek poet Dionysios Solomos, creator
of the Greek National Hymn. A museum dedicated to the life and work
of the poet has been built close to the Plateia (square) Agiou Markou.
A Museum of post-Byzantine art is also standing on Solomos Square,
and a museum exhibiting information about the life and work of the
Greek novelist and play writer Grigorios Xenopoulos can be found close
to the Church of Agios Dionysios
On the left end of the waterfront lies the impressive church of Agios
Dionysios dedicated to the saint patron of Zante whose corpse is kept
in a silver carved reliquary. Some beautiful and valuable wall paintings
are housed in the church.
The gate and the outer walls of a Venetian fortress that used to overlook
the capital are standing on a hill; from this spot one can admire
an astonishing view over the capital and its surroundings.
