ZANTE TOWN
there are several villages to visit in zante Zante Town is the capital of the island and its main harbour and has a population of about 10.000 inhabitants. Located on the eastern part of the island the town used to have an architecture influenced by the Venetians, the French and the English conquerors.

Unfortunately, the strong earthquakes of 1953 that shakes all the Ionian Islands destroyed many of the elegant mansions and beautiful neoclassical buildings. Only a few traditional and neoclassical buildings and houses and some churches have survived the damages.

A few areas like the spacious Solomos Square have been built after the earthquakes in an n attempt to recreate and protect the old architectural style.

All the commercial and cultural life of the island is concentrated on the third parallel street of the waterfront which is the most popular place of Zante and concentrates various restaurants, tourist shops and ferry agencies.

A Museum of post-Byzantine art is also standing on Solomos Square, and a museum exhibiting information about the life and work of the Greek novelist and play writer Grigorios Xenopoulos can be found close to the Church of Agios Dionysios

On the left end of the waterfront lies the impressive church of Agios Dionysios dedicated to the saint patron of Zante whose corpse is kept in a silver carved reliquary. Some beautiful and valuable wall paintings are housed in the church.
